DELAND, Fla. - The North Florida softball team capped its 2006 season - and its inaugural Division I campaign - on Thursday night with a pair of losses to Stetson, 5-1 and 5-0, which allowed the Hatters to maintain sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings.
UNF (28-29, 9-11 A-Sun) couldn't hold off one of the A-Sun's hottest-hitting teams in either game - allowing four runs over the final two innings in game one to break open a tie game, and then giving up three runs in the first three innings of game two to dig an early hole.
The Hatters (39-13, 14-4 A-Sun) pounded out 21 hits in the doubleheader and got complete- game performances from Erica Demers and Heather Colding, respectively, to extend their winning streak to 12 consecutive games at home. UNF lost its sixth straight to end the season, all of which had been by one run before Thursday.
UNF tallied six hits in the opener, getting its only run on Ashley Parenteau's fourth-inning home run that tied the game 1-1. Stetson powered back in front in the fifth inning, however, on Andrea Migliori's three-run home run and then added another run in the sixth on a Shawna Wiggs RBI-single. That was all the offense the Hatters would need.
Demers (23-4) retired seven of the last eight batters she faced to seal the win, allowing only one walk with six strikeouts. Tori Ahern (9-12) suffered the loss for UNF, allowing 10 hits and five runs in a complete-game effort.
In game two, The Lady Ospreys couldn't solve Colding (11-7), who allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out six. She retired 13 of the final 14 batters she faced.
The Hatters scored two runs in the second inning and another in the third to take an early 3-0 lead and put the game away in the sixth with Melissa Wiggins' two-run home run.
Parenteau collected two of the Lady Ospreys' three hits - including a double in the sixth. Kelli Pitts (9-8) suffered the loss for UNF, allowing nine hits and three runs in four innings.
Thursday marked the final games for four UNF seniors - Alisha Phillips, Dyann Busse, Kelli Richards and Pitts.
