UNF falls 8-5 to JU

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.  - Jacksonville scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to steal an 8-5 victory over North Florida in the Sun Trust River City Rumble series on Friday night at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys and Dolphins are all even at seven wins each in their quest for the "Old Wooden Barrel."

The Ospreys (18-15, 10-6 A-Sun) struck in the first inning with an RBI single by catcher James Belyea, and a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Hodach allowed Jimmy Glanville to come home to give the Ospreys an early 2-0 lead. The Dolphins cut their deficit in half in the top of second on a solo home run by Gordie Gronkowski.

Brett Maloley hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning to extend the UNF lead to 3-1. Matt Oxendine doubled down the left field line to start off the third inning and came around to score on an RBI double by Jimmy Glanville.

Both teams' bats went silent between the fourth and sixth innings, but JU broke the drought with one run in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single by Pete Clifford that sent Matt Lopez across the dish.

The Ospreys answered in the bottom of the seventh frame as Damon Olinto scored on a throwing error by JU catcher Brad Simmons to make the score 5-2 in favor of UNF.

The Dolphins started their comeback in the eighth inning when Gronkowski started off the frame with an infield single to pickup his second hit of the night. Two batters later Simmons made up for his throwing error with a two-out, two-RBI double to get JU within one at 5-4.

JU loaded the bases with one out in the of the top ninth inning and went ahead on infield single by Thomas LePage that scored two runs on the play as Matt Oxendine was not granted timeout by the base umpire -allowing Daniel Murphy to score from second base to put JU on top for good.

Brad Johnson (4-1) pitched 6.1 innings, scattered five hits, and allowed three runs in a no decision. Josh Papelbon worked just one inning and surrendered four runs - falling to 4-3 on the year. Matt Davis (3-1) tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for JU.

Belyea and Glanville each went 1-for-4 with an RBI and Maloley went 2-for-2 to lead the Ospreys' offensive attack.

The Ospreys and Dolphins will continue the Sun Trust River City Rumble tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. UNF will send out right-hander Ryan Amason (4-3) to the mound, while JU will counter with D.J. Ackley (2-3).
