JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 26, 2006) - The
University of North Florida softball team got back to
its winning ways with a doubleheader sweep of
Birmingham Southern on Tuesday. UNF won the
opener 2-0 before winning a wild second game 7-6.
Ashley Parenteau had a hit in each game, including a
triple in the nightcap to lead the UNF (18-17)
offense. Tori Ahern threw a two-hitter in game one
to capture the win, while Katie Brosky and Kelli Pitts
held Birmingham Southern (19-8) down long enough
in game two.
"We finally got some timely hitting today," UNF head
coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "We still left a lot of
runners in scoring position, but it was nice to score
some runs."
After being shutout in both ends of a doubleheader in
its last outing against Kennesaw State, UNF jumped
on the board in the first inning of game one, before
adding another run in the third to complete the
scoring. The first four hitters in the order -
Parenteau, Christina Evans, Kelli Rutenbar and Alisha
Phillips - accounted for four of the team's five hits
and both RBIs. Kelli Richards collected UNF's fifth hit.
Phillips started the scoring in the bottom of the first
with a two out RBI single to left that brought home
Evans. Rutenbar came through again with two outs in
the third when she plated Parenteau after reaching
on an infield hit. Parenteau started the inning with a
walk, stole second and scored when she hustled
home from second on Rutenbar's infield single.
That was enough for Ahern (5-8), who had 10
strikeouts and never allowed a runner past second
base. The shutout was her first of the season.
"We got good pitching all day," Wilmoth said. "Tori
continues to make good progress [from an early
season injury], while Kelli and Katie have shown the
ability to complement each other very well."
The Lady Ospreys staked Brosky to a 1-0 lead in the
second inning when Richards drove home Gwen
Williams with a single to left.
BSC bounced back with four runs in the fifth, two of
which came on a Brook Reed RBI single to left. Reed
finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a pair of
runs after collecting one of the Panthers' two hits in
the opener.
UNF had a chance to break the game open in the
third, loading the bases with nobody out. The lady
Ospreys, however, failed to score. That wasn't the
case in the bottom of the fifth, when UNF again
loaded the bases with nobody out. This time around
the Lady Ospreys cashed in with six runs.
Cailtlin Miller singled up the middle with one out to
start the scoring before Randalyn Rogers was hit by
a pitch two batters later to drive in another run.
Jessica Sexton walked with the bases loaded to tie
the game 4-4, while Parenteau brought her and two
more home with a triple to right-center.
Pitts (7-4) came on from there to work a 1-2-3 sixth
before getting into some trouble in the seventh. Pitts
gave up back-to-back RBI singles to Nikki Rombough
and Jennifer Welborn before getting Melissa
Muelenfeld to ground back to the pitching circle,
ending the game with two runners in scoring position.
Raquel Sanfiel (3-4) took the loss in game two, while
Kristina Villavicencio (12-4) suffered the loss in the
opener.
Every UNF starter in game two reached base safely,
with seven of them collecting a hit. Miller led the
pack with a 2-for-3 performance that included a run
and an RBI.
UNF is back in conference play this weekend when it
travels to Mercer on Sunday for a 1 p.m.
doubleheader.
