TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Catcher Jonathan Hodach had a career-high four hits, but the North Florida baseball team was unable to overcome the top-ranked team in the country, falling 14-8 to Florida State on Tuesday night at Dick Howser Stadium.
The Seminoles (26-2) jumped on the board with three runs in the first inning, but the Ospreys' bats came to life in the top of the second inning to score six runs in the frame. Hodach started the rally with one of his two hits in the inning and eventually came around to score on a single by Grant Rogers. A sacrifice fly by Jon Dandridge plated Brandon Diaz, while Matt Oxendine, Brennan Grogan and Jimmy Glanville all produced run scoring hits in the frame. UNF (15-13) sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning to grab a 6-3 lead.
FSU answered in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run by leadoff man Shane Robinson. After recording two outs, Ryne Malone reached on a bunt single down the third base line and Buster Posey lifted a home run over the wall in right center to put FSU on top 7-6. The home runs were two of five on the night for the Noles.
In the fifth inning, Diaz hit his team-leading third home run of the season to make the score 9-8 in the favor of FSU, but the Ospreys were unable to get close the gap any further. FSU added one run in the sixth and seventh, two in the eight and one in the ninth to close out the game.
The Ospreys roughed up FSU starter Barret Browning for eight runs and 10 hits - the most by an FSU starter this season. The eight runs tied the season high for runs allowed by Florida State this season. Travis Burge (1-0) pitched 3.2 innings in relief and struck out five Osprey batters to earn the win. Ryan Amason (3-3) worked three innings and allowed six runs to take the loss.
Glanville was 3-for-5 and Rogers went 2-for- 4 for UNF. Dennis Guinn went 3-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs scored for FSU.
UNF will return to the diamond against Atlantic Sun Conference foe Mercer on Saturday in Macon, Ga. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for noon.
