JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Florida Atlantic second baseman William Block was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and designated hitter Ovy Ramirez was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, to lead the Owls past North Florida 6-3 in game two of the teams' three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series on Saturday afternoon at Harmon Stadium.
The Owls (13-13, 3-5 A-Sun) outhit the Ospreys 12- 6 and took advantage of four UNF errors and a pair of critical early misplays to build a 4-1 lead. UNF (14-12, 7-4 A-Sun) scored two runs in the fourth inning to climb within one run at 4-3 but could never get closer.
FAU starter Chris Salberg (3-4) pitched 6.3 strong innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs while striking out 11 to earn the win. Mike Crotta struck out the side in the ninth to record his fourth save.
UNF's Ryan Amason (3-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs and nine hits in four innings. Jared Incinelli relived Amason in the fifth and allowed one run on two hits over 4.2 innings to help keep the Ospreys close.
UNF took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Jonathan Hodach RBI-single, but FAU tied the game in the second on Block's RBI hit up the middle. A two-run home run by FAU's Jordan Hafer in the third pushed the Owls ahead, however, and FAU tallied single runs in the fourth and fifth after that.
The Ospreys' two-run rally in the fourth came on an RBI-double by Grant Rogers and a fly ball by Brett Maloley that FAU centerfielder Tim Mascia lost in the sun - giving Maloley an RBI-double that scored Rogers.
Salberg, Chris Eberhart and Crotta settled down from there, however, and held UNF hitless over the final 3.2 innings, retiring 12 of the final 13 Ospreys they faced.
Hodach was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for UNF.
The teams will conclude their series on Sunday afternoon at Harmon Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m. The contest will be aired locally on WIOJ-AM 1010 and via the World Wide Web at www.UNFOspreys.com.
