CONWAY, S.C. - The University of North Florida softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Wednesday at Coastal Carolina, falling to the Lady Chanticleers 2-0 and 15-4 in Conway, S.C.
The Coastal pitching combination of Maegen Johnson and Christine Doyle held the Lady Ospreys to eight hits in the doubleheader, with Amy Higgs leading the way with a hit in each contest for UNF. Kelli Rutenbar collected a pair of hits in the second game and scored two runs.
Johnson helped herself at the plate as well, driving home the first run of game one in the bottom of the first inning.
UNF starter Kelli Pitts (5-3) avoided any further damage in her next four innings of work before being lifted for Alisha Phillips in the bottom of the sixth. Pitts struck out one and allowed three hits, two of which came in the first inning.
Phillips was touched for a pair of doubles by Brittany Nelson and Glynn Tolleson that led to a Coastal run in the sixth and completed the scoring in game one.
Nelson led the Lady Chanticleers with three hits.
Amy Higgs, Caitlin Miller and Lauren Pulling collected the only hits for the Lady Ospreys, who were shut out for the second straight game.
Johnson (4-1) earned the win for Coastal, not allowing a walk and striking out six.
Coastal got off to a quick start in the second game, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first after sending all nine hitters in the order to the plate. Sara Hostetler started the rally with a double, while Danyelle Gerdts drove home a pair of runs with a triple.
The Chanticleers added a run in the second inning on a Tori Ahern wild pitch, before UNF cracked the scoreboard for the first time in the top of the fourth inning when Gwen Williams drove home a run with a single that plated Kelli Rutenbar. Alisha Phillips and Ashley Parenteau came home to score one batter later when Miller reached on an error.
The Chanticleers added three more runs in the fifth.
Ahern (4-6) dropped her fifth-straight decision, allowing six runs - two earned - in two innings of work to go along with three walks and a pair of strikeouts. Katie Broskey came on from there, giving up the final nine runs of the contest.
Doyle improved to 4-6 with the win.
UNF will open Atlantic Sun Conference play on Friday when it hosts East Tennessee State in a doubleheader that starts at 4 p.m.
