TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (March 12, 2006) - The
University of North Florida softball team closed out
the 2006 Florida State Invitational with a 3-0 loss to
St. John's on Sunday in Tallahassee, Fla.
UNF (15-12) finished the tournament 2-3, losing a
pair of games Friday before bouncing back with two
wins on Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the
silver bracket.
Jessica Marical scored the first two runs of the game
for the Red Storm, coming in from second on a two-
out blooper off the bat of Tami Hill that fell in short
center field to give St. John's a 1-0 lead in the top of
the second inning.
Marical followed that up with a home run in the top
of the fourth to make it a 2-0 game.
UNF had a chance to counter in the fourth, taking
advantage of a Kelli Rutenbar hit and a Red Storm
error to go along with a hit batsman to load the
bases. The Lady Ospreys, however, failed to score
on the opportunity and missed another chance in the
sixth inning when Rutenbar was thrown out at the
plate after a Gwen Williams single up the middle.
Rutenbar went 2-for-2 to lead the offense. She
hit .400 for the weekend with a triple, a pair of
doubles and four RBIs. Williams also hit .400 for UNF
with a pair of doubles.
St. John's added one more run in the top of the
seventh to chase UNF starter Tori Ahern (5-6) and
complete the scoring.
The Lady Ospreys are off next week before heading
to Coastal Carolina for a doubleheader on March 22.
