JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida's 2-1 win over Atlantic Sun Conference rival Campbell turned into a historic night at Harmon Stadium.
UNF junior right-hander Josh Papelbon pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn his fourth save of the season and in the process become UNF's all-time career saves leader, passing former Osprey standout Jerrod Payne with 20 career saves.
"It's a great feeling," Josh Papelbon said. "I really wanted to come out and dominate in the ninth inning and get a strikeout on the last batter and I was able to do that. It felt great. I can't say enough about Jared Incinelli and the job he's done. If he didn't come in and keep those games close last season and even this season, I never would have had a chance to break the record."
The series-opening win also proved to be a family affair as Josh's twin brother Jeremy Papelbon (2-1) earned his second win of the season after working 7.1 innings allowing a run on four hits and a pair of walks. The left-hander also struck out five Campbell batters.
"I was a little nervous when (Josh) was out there pitching and I was in the dugout," Jeremy Papelbon said. "I always am when he is pitching, but I think it's great that he was able to get the save and the record and I was able to get the win on the same night."
Senior right-hander Jared Incinelli did not allow a hit after facing two batters in the eighth inning.
The UNF offense was paced by junior second baseman Andrew Chapman's 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Senior Jonathan Hodach was 1-for-4 with an RBI, while fellow senior Grant Rogers was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The Ospreys struck first by plating a single run in the bottom of the second inning. UNF sophomore designated hitter Travis Martin started the rally with a single. Chapman followed with a single down the left-field line that advanced Martin to third base. On the ensuing at bat, Rogers singled to left field to drive in Martin and give UNF an early 1-0 lead.
UNF extended its lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning after junior left fielder Brett Maloley led off with a single and then scored on a double to the gap by Hodach.
The Camels cut UNF's lead to a run in the top of the eighth inning when right fielder Brandon Scott singled to plate catcher Matt Marek who opened the inning with a double to left-center field.
The Ospreys and the Camels will conclude their three-game set with a doubleheader on Saturday. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET.
Both games will be carried live on WIOJ-AM 1010, as well as via the World Wide Web at www.UNFOspreys.com. John Laurence will be calling the play-by-play.
