STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern avenged a 7-2 opening-day loss to the University of North Florida by taking an 11-3 win on Sunday on J.I. Clements Stadium to earn a split in the two-game series.
The Ospreys (1-1) were led by junior Damon Olinto's 2-for-5 performance at the plate. The Jacksonville, Fla., native also drove in a run.
Junior Brandon Diaz was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Junior Jimmy Glanville, senior Jonathan Hodach and sophomore Andy Warren each went 1-for-2 on the afternoon.
UNF stranded 10 runners in the game.
Senior Ryan Amason suffered the loss for UNF. Amason was chased from the game after just 1.2 innings of work. The right hander allowed five runs on five hits, while striking out just one Eagle batter.
For the second game in a row the Eagles jumped out to an early lead when Georgia Southern designated hitter Derrick Smith hit a two-run home run down the right field line to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
The Eagles' offense continued to click in the bottom of the second inning when Georgia Southern plated three runs on four hits and one UNF error. David Richardson started the rally with a two-run home run to left center. Georgia Southern (1-1) pushed one more run across in their half of the second when Chris Hollis singled to center field to score Chris Shehan and give the Eagles a 5-0 lead.
The Ospreys got on the board in the top of the fifth inning when Warren singled to center field to plate Grant Rogers who had reached base on the second of three walks issued by Josh Lairsey. Lairsey had retired 10 consecutive UNF batters before Jimmy Glanville reached on a walk.
Georgia Southern answered back in the bottom of the fifth with three more runs, highlighted by a Greg Dowling double, to take an 8-1 lead into the sixth inning. The Eagle rally was also aided by two UNF errors.
The Eagles pushed their lead to double-digits in the bottom of the sixth inning when Mike Economos delivered a triple with the bases loaded and two outs to plate three runs and give Georgia Southern an 11-1 lead.
UNF pushed a run across in the top of the seventh inning when Chad Knight and Jon Dandridge opened the inning with a pair of infield singles. Knight came around to score on a Damon Olinto single down the right field line to cut the Eagles' lead to 11-2.
The Ospreys added a single run in the top of the eight inning when Andrew Chapman doubled down the right field line with one out and later came around to score on a Diaz double. Georgia Southern led 11-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth.
The Ospreys will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to face No. 20 LSU for a three-game set. The first game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be carried live on WIOJ-AM 1010 and www.UNFOspreys.com.
