JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - University of North Florida senior right-hander Ryan Amason pitched five-shutout innings to help propel the Ospreys to a 3-0 win over Western Michigan on Monday night at Harmon Stadium.
Amason (2-1) allowed just two hits and walks, while striking out eight Bronco batters to help UNF (7-5) pick up its first win at home this season after dropping the first two games of the series to Western Michigan (2-1).
Junior left-hander Brad Johnson took over for Amason in the sixth inning and worked three scoreless innings striking out six Broncos, while allowing no hits and two walks. Junior right-hander Josh Papelbon earned the save for UNF.
"Our pitchers did a heck of a job all series," UNF head coach Dusty Rhodes said. "We still have to start hitting the ball and getting those guys some runs, but the bottom line is that we got a win tonight."
Senior Matt Oxendine, junior Jon Dandridge and sophomore Jimmy Glanville each drove in a run to help pace the Osprey offensive attack. Seniors Brennan Grogan, Jonathan Hodach and Grant Rogers also collected hits for UNF.
Grogan also scored two runs.
Bryan French (0-1) suffered the loss for the Broncos.
After failing to score before the seventh inning in game one of the series, and being shutout in game two, the Ospreys came out swinging in the series finale, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning.
Grogan started the rally with a double to right-center field. After a sacrifice bunt by Oxendine, Glanville singled through the right side of the infield to plate Grogan.
UNF added to its lead in the fourth inning when junior Damon Olinto reached base on a throwing error by the Western Michigan pitcher. After a successful sacrifice bunt by junior James Belyea, Dandridge plated Olinto with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Ospreys added their final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when Grogan reached on a walk, stole second and third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Oxendine.
UNF will return to action on Thursday when they play host to five-time Japanese national champion Aoyama Gakuin in an exhibition game. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
