JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida's much-anticipated home opener ended on a sour note on Saturday thanks largely to the pitching of Western Michigan starter Dan O'Brien.
The Broncos' left-hander held the Ospreys (6-4) hitless through six innings before giving way to right-hander Dan Coberley in the bottom of the seventh inning.
O'Brien (1-0) also tallied four strikeouts in the win.
"The bottom line is that (O'Brien) did a great job," UNF head coach Dusty Rhodes said. "He really pitched a great game and did a good job of keeping our hitters off balance. They did their job. Now we have to come back and try and get a game back tomorrow."
The loss snapped the Ospreys' five-game winning streak. It also marks just the second time in the program's 19-year history that UNF has lost its home opener.
Senior right-hander Jacob Dixon (1-2) suffered the loss for UNF. Dixon tossed five innings, allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks. He also struck out two Broncos.
UNF freshmen Antonio Franzese and John Frawley pitched 2.1 innings and 1.2 innings, respectively. Franzese gave up four hits, while fanning one Western Michigan batter. Frawley surrendered one hit, while tallying one strikeout.
Seniors Matt Oxendine and Brennan Grogan, along with junior Damon Olinto and sophomore Jimmy Glanville each collected one hit apiece for the Ospreys.
The Broncos (1-0) got on the scoreboard first by pushing three runs across in the fourth inning. A home run to left-center field by senior catcher Mark Abro started the rally. Western Michigan would use a trio of singles to plate two more runs and take a 3-0 lead.
The Ospreys plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Grogan started the rally with a double off the right-field wall. After Grogan advanced to third base on a wild pitch by Coberley, Glanville doubled to right-center field to plate Grogan and cut the Broncos' lead to 3-1. A single by Olinto moved Glanville to third. He later scored on a balk by Coberley to draw the Ospreys to within a single run, but the UNF rally would stall with a line out to second base and a pop up to the catcher.
The Ospreys will be back in action on Sunday when they take on Western Michigan in game two of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. The game can be heard live via the World Wide Web at www.UNFOspreys.com.
