
UNF takes 2 in Troy

TROY, Ala. - The University of North Florida softball team captured a pair of wins on Saturday at the Trojan Classic in Troy, Ala., edging out the host Trojans 4-3 before downing Alabama A&M 8-1.
The victories upped UNF's record to 4-0 on the season.
UNF slugged out 22 hits between the two games, while its pitching staff only allowed nine. Amy Higgs helped lead the offensive charge with three hits, while Ashley Parenteau homered in the nightcap.
UNF got its day started with a victory over defending A-Sun champ Troy. UNF scored two runs in the second inning then added another two in the fourth for the final margin of victory.
Randalyn Rogers got the scoring started for the Lady Ospreys in the second inning when she reached with on a one-out walk and came around to score when Gwen Williams reached on an error. Higgs brought home Williams two batters later with an RBI single.
Troy countered with a run in the bottom of the third before the Lady Ospreys scored two in the top of the fourth. Christina Evans brought home Higgs and Dyann Busse with a double that gave the Lady Ospreys a 4-1 lead.
The Trojans scored runs in the fourth and fifth and put a runner on third in the sixth before Kelli Pitts worked out of the jam. Katie Brosky came on from there to close out the win, working a 1-2-3 seventh and earning her first save in a Lady Osprey uniform.
Tori Ahern (2-0) earned the win, pitching four innings and surrendering two earned runs on three hits.
"We were excited to win the first game and get our first Division I win by defeating the defending A-Sun champions," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "They were tough, but we hung with them."
Brosky earned the win in game two, allowing one earned run on four hits to go along with eight strikeouts.
Parenteau got the scoring started in the top of the third inning with her first home run of the season. Evans followed her with a single, then came around to score when Alisha Phillips reached on a fielder's choice. Parenteau, Evans, Phillips, Evans and Kelli Rutenbar all had two hits in the game, while Parenteau drove in two.
UNF scored three runs in the third, followed by four in the fourth and one on the seventh.
The Lady Ospreys will close out the Troy Classic on Sunday with the same two teams, taking on Alabama A&M at 11 a.m. and Troy at 1 p.m.
