ORLANDO, Fla. - The
University of North Florida women's basketball team
fell victim to a 12-3 run in the final two minutes of
play on Monday to fall 55-44 in its opening game of
the UCF Holiday Classic.
The Lady Ospreys (2-7) cut an eight-point second
half deficit to one, but couldn't get any closer, never
taking a lead in the second half.
Tamara Hubbard and Jennifer Bowen each scored in
double digits for the Lady Ospreys. Hubbard led the
way with 15 points, while Bowen scored in double
digits for the third game in a row, finishing the
contest with 10 points.
UCF (3-8) controlled the boards throughout the
game, outrebounding the Lady Ospreys 37-21, while
pulling down 14 offensive rebounds.
UCF's Kuenta Miles led all players with 16 points and
11 rebounds, while Celeste Hudson finished behind
her with 11 points for the Golden Knights.
Hubbard scored five of UNF's first seven points,
hitting a 3-pointer that cut a UCF advantage from 9-
4 to 9-7. The Lady Ospreys went on a 6-1 run from
there thanks to 3-pointers by Bowen and Guldager.
UCF outscored UNF 14-4 to end the opening half of
play and take a 24-19 advantage into the locker
room. Amber Long hit a shot at the buzzer, banking it
in from the paint to take the five-point lead at the
break.
Bowen and Hubbard each had seven points in the
half to lead UNF. The Lady Ospreys were
outrebounded in the opening frame 22-12, and 8-1
on the offensive boards. Miles led all players with
nine rebounds, three of which came on the offensive
end.
UCF extended its lead to eight early in the second
half, but the Lady Ospreys cut it to two on a Bowen
3-pointer, then eventually pulled within one twice in
the second half. The Lady Ospreys had a chance to
take the lead, trailing 43-42 with 2:40 to play. UNF,
however, turned the ball over, which led to a Miles'
layup. The Lady Ospreys turned the ball over their
next two trips down the court and never recovered
from there.
Each team had 18 turnovers and eight steals in the
contest.
The Lady Ospreys will wind up tournament play at
the UCF Holiday Classic on Tuesday at 5 p.m. when
they take on Georgia State. UNF will open its home
slate on Dec. 29 when it hosts Hofstra at 2 p.m.
