NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The University of North Florida volleyball team put forth a solid performance on Friday night, but it wasn't enough to overcome hot-hitting Belmont in a battle of Atlantic Sun Conference second-place teams at the Curb Event Center.
Belmont (20-6, 7-1 A-Sun) hit .370 and got 21 kills from Cat Mundy and 69 assists from setter Colleen Nilson to upend UNF 3-1 (30-20, 28-30, 30-25, 30- 23) and take sole possession of the No. 2 spot in the A-Sun standings.
UNF (15-15, 6-2 A-Sun) hit .253 and got a career-high 21 kills from Amy Stroder, but it wasn't enough to offset Belmont's offensive onslaught. The Bruins collected 78 kills, compared to just 58 for the Lady Ospreys.
Six Belmont players hit .400 or better to lead the way, including Jaye Schuler, who had 17 kills and hit .500. Katie Tobiasz added 10 kills and hit .409.
After the teams split the first two games, Belmont pulled away in game three - hitting .375 to break open a close contest. In game four, the teams were tied at five before Belmont put together a 5-2 run to move ahead for good. UNF sliced its deficit to 19-16 after that, but an 8-4 run by the Bruins pushed them ahead 27-20 and all but ended the UNF threat.
Maegan Weisert collected 14 kills and 10 digs for UNF - tallying her 18th double-double of the season. Emily Kohler had 10 kills and hit .360 for the Lady Ospreys. Senior libero Tara Taylor had 19 digs, moving her to within 41 digs of the school record with three matches to play.
UNF caps its trip to the Music City and its conference season on Saturday with an 8 p.m. match at A-Sun foe Lipscomb.
