UNF falls in tournament opener

MIAMI, Fla. (Nov. 24, 2006) - University of North Florida freshman point guard Shandrea Moore scored 14 points, but it wasn't enough to get the Lady Ospreys past a Florida International squad in an 86-46 loss on Friday at Pharmed Arena.
FIU (3-1) controlled the boards, outrebounding the Lady Ospreys (1-3) 50-33, while pulling down 18 offensive rebounds and scoring 19 second-chance points.
After their most productive first half of the season (26 points) the Lady Ospreys struggled to find their shooting touch in the second half, scoring 20 points and shooting only 22.6 percent from the field.
FIU's Minika Bosilj led all scorers with 23 points, finishing one rebound shy of a double-double. Lasma Jekabsone followed her with 17 points.
UNF hung with the Lady Panthers early, getting two-straight baskets from Willonda Windham to make it an 11-10 contest with 13:37 to play in the opening half. Windham came into the game to relieve Antoinette Reames after she picked up two early fouls. Twelve of UNF's 26 first-half points came off the bench, as Sabrina Schmitt also had four points for UNF.
The Lady Ospreys countered a 9-0 FIU run with a 6-0 run capped by a Schmitt jumper to trail 20-16 with 7:50 to play. UNF was as close as five points in the final three minutes of the half, but trailed 41-26 after FIU's Iva Ciglar hit a 3-pointer to end the opening half of play.
FIU kept the pressure on in the second half and never looked back, knocking the Lady Ospreys into the consolation game of the FIU Thanksgiving Classic. The Lady Ospreys will play the loser of the Tulane/Villanova contest on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in that game.
Jennifer Guldager and Cecilia Woolfolk each had five rebounds to lead the Lady Ospreys, while FIU's Liene Bersone led all players with 10 rebounds. Woolfolk and Reames each had a pair of blocks for UNF.
The Lady Ospreys turned the ball over 17 times, while coming away with six steals. FIU finished the game with 12 turnovers.
