DURHAM, N.C. - The University of North Florida men's soccer team put forth a valiant effort against the nation's second- ranked team on Tuesday night, but ultimately the Ospreys were no match for high-powered Duke in falling 5-0 to the Blue Devils at Koskinen Stadium.
Duke (13-2-1) took a 2-0 halftime advantage and tacked on three more scores in the second half to pull away in its 2006 home finale. UNF (4-11-2) managed three shots against a stiff Blue Devil defense but couldn't find the net in its second matchup with a nationally ranked foe since moving to Division I a year ago.
Duke outshot UNF 31-3, getting goals from Tomek Charowski and Mike Grella in the first half to jump out in front. Paul Dudley, Joshua Bienenfeld and Jordan Lewis each added goals in the second half for the Blue Devils, who won their sixth straight.
Brendan Fitzgerald recorded a pair of saves in goal for Duke, while Taylor Unsinger recorded six saves in net for the Ospreys. Martin Schuhte and Akil Burgen and David Pollard tallied the Ospreys' shots.
UNF's only other matchup with a nationally ranked program came in 2005, when the Ospreys lost to 24th-ranked Loyola Marymount.
The Ospreys return to action on Monday in their home finale when they square off against Palm Beach Atlantic at Hodges Stadium. Match time is set for 5 p.m. on "Senior Day," when the squad will honor outgoing senior Mats Elmsater prior to kickoff.
