
Women win Furman Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C., - The final meet before the Atlantic Sun Conference Cross Country Championships was a success for the University of North Florida cross country teams. The women's team was the Furman Invitational champions and also had the individual women's champion; the men's team finished fifth out of a field of 16.
The women's team won the meet (5k) with 73 total points, beating out teams such as North Carolina, Clemson and host Furman. The Lady Ospreys also finished ahead of conference opponents Mercer (230 points) and Kennesaw State (113 points).
Senior Sarah Coghlan returned to the Lady Osprey line-up re-energized after sitting out the last meet, winning the individual championship with a time of 18:20. Junior Amanda Davey also re-entered the UNF line-up ready to go, taking third place, with a time of 18:41.
Junior Kelly Marshall was the next Lady Osprey to finish in the top 20, finishing 18th with a time of 19:43. Senior Amber Smith beat her time from last years Furman Invite, with a time of 19:55 (24th). Freshman Hillary Adams continued her great season earning points for UNF with her 27th place finish (19:57), while senior Golden Creavy finished with the same time as Adams, but took 28th place. Sophomore Kayley DeLorm rounded out the points for the Lady Ospreys with her 36th place finish, with a time of 20:05. Other notable finishes include Becky Castleberry who finished 44th (20:23), Lauren Vogel who took 67th place (21:03) and Wendy Livingston who finished in 72nd place (21:19).
The men's team started the meet (8k) ready to go as they beat conference opponent Mercer by 167 team points. The Ospreys finished right behind Kennesaw State trailing them by only seven points.
Freshman Fredrick Johansson picked up right where he left off after the Auburn Invitational, finishing in eighth place with a time of 26:15. Sophomore Goran Kosic was the next to finish for UNF, taking 24th place with a time of 26:51. Nathan Holden, who also sat out the FSU Invitational, finished in 28th place (27:01). Junior Patrick Canfield rounded out the top 40, with a 39th place finish (27:39).
Junior Jeff Auletta and freshman Sammy Palmer finished just two seconds apart, with Auletta finishing 52nd (28:05) and Palmer taking 55th (28:07). Freshman Jimmy Fitzpatrick and junior Dane Simmons managed to finish eight seconds apart from each other, with Fitzpatrick finishing in 28:30 (67th) and Simmons finishing with a time of 28:38 (70th). Ryan Austin finished in 76th place (28:52), while Bryan Gering came in 79th place (29:06).
North Florida heads to Boiling Springs, N.C. on Oct. 28 for the A-Sun Championships.
