JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's basketball team upped its record to 4-1 at home this season as it received 29 points off the bench in a 61-55 victory against Stetson Thursday night at UNF Arena.
UNF (5-10, 3-4 A-Sun) was without the services of starting guard Tamara Hubbard, who was sick with bronchitis, but overcame the loss of her thanks to a 13-point outing by Alana Mountfield and another six points from Karli Knudsen off the bench.
"We got good contributions from Alana, Karli and C.C. Woolfolk off the bench," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "Different people stepped up for us tonight and that is going to give us some depth down the stretch."
Stetson (3-11, 1-6 A-Sun) received a game high 23 points from guard Nefertiti Walker, but only shot 29 percent from the field. With the loss, the Lady Hatters fell to 0-9 on the road.
Stetson trailed by seven at the half, but opened up the second half on a 13-5 run to take a 36-35 lead thanks to the low post combination of Jeni Hobbs and Janene Maclin.
UNF re-took the lead on a Jackie Beik layup and never let the Lady Hatters closer than a point the rest of the game. A pair of free throws by Walker made it a 44-43 game with 8:15 remaining. Mountfield answered that with a 3-pointer and Jackie Beik followed with a pair of layups to help cap an 8-0 run.
The Lady Ospreys finally put the game away from the free throw line in the final minute after Beik and Kayla Sheldon combined to hit 5-of-6 shots from the free throw line. Sheldon made all four of her attempts in the final 13 seconds to give UNF the win.
Beik led all UNF starters with 13 points, matching Mountfield's team high, while Antoinette Reames came off the bench to score nine points and block a pair of shots.
Maclin finished with a double-double for Stetson, scoring 11 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
Walker scored 13 of Stetson's first 18 points and eight of the first 10 to help the Lady Hatters get out to a 10-6 advantage. UNF tied the game on back-to-back jumpers by Anna Haberlein and Beik. The Lady Ospreys closed the half on a 10-5 run, which Knudsen capped with her second 3-pointer of the half.
"We played well tonight and everyone contributed," Knudsen said. "We didn't have our best rebounding night, but we made up for it on the defensive end."
Stetson won the rebounding battle 39-31, while turnovers were even at 22-22.
The Lady Ospreys will close out their two-game homestand on Saturday when they take on Mercer at 2 p.m. Live coverage of the game can be heard in the Jacksonville area on 1010-AM WIOJ or on the World Wide Web at www.unfospreys.com.
