
UNF continues championship push, knocks out SBU

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.- The ninth ranked University of North Florida men's tennis team continued its championship run on Wednesday, defeating No. 25 Southwest Baptist 5-1 in the NCAA National Tournament round of 16. The win improves the Ospreys to 21-6 overall and advances them to Thursday's national quarterfinals, where they will face No. 20 BYU-Hawaii.
On Wednesday, the UNF freshman doubles team of Eduardo Pereira and Elad Gabay picked up an 8-5 victory at the No. 2 position, which was followed by an 8-3 win by Jose Maria Terrera and Damien De Polignac at the No. 3 spot. German Escallon and Leonardo Gomes fell to the No. 10 team of Dante Cipulli and Johan Nortje 8-6, as UNF took a 2-1 lead into singles.
In singles, North Florida had no problem getting the three wins it needed to wrap up the match. Straight- set wins by Terrera at No. 2, Escallon at No. 3 and Glen Marshall at No. 6 sealed the victory.
The Ospreys will face BYU-Hawaii at 10 a.m. on Thursday. The Seasiders enter the match with a 23- 5 overall record, having reached this point of the tournament largely by receiving byes. Their lone victory came Wednesday in a 5-0 win over Kutztown.
The winner takes on the winner of the Ouachita Baptist and Barry in Friday's semifinals.
