JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida baseball team scored 10 runs in the first three innings and pounded out 17 hits against future Atlantic Sun Conference foe Campbell on Wednesday night to post a 12-8 win and remain perfect in Kennel Club Classic play.
The Ospreys (14-6) are 6-0 in the first two weeks of the tournament at Harmon Stadium - all against Division I opponents - and have outscored foes 55- 26 in those contests.
Against Campbell, Josh Howard was 3-for-4 and Brennan Grogan, Jon Skorupski and Judd Loveland each collected two hits apiece to lead the UNF attack. Grogan, Skorupski and Brooks West each drove in two runs, while five UNF pitchers combined to allow 11 hits and six earned runs to the Camels (9-5).
UNF scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning off Campbell starter Tyler Sexton (0-2) to take control early. Twelve men batted in the inning as the Ospreys collected six singles and a two-run double by West. They added four more runs in the bottom of the third, highlighted by Grogan's two-run single. Campbell scored four runs over the final two innings to make things closer, but Josh Papelbon came on in the ninth to record the game's final three outs.
West (1-1) earned the win in relief for the Ospreys, allowing two hits and an earned run in 1.1 innings.
Sexton suffered the loss, allowing eight earned runs and 11 hits in two innings. Mike Priest was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Camels.
