JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (March 7, 2005) - The University of North Florida softball team held Lander scoreless in a pair of Peach Belt Conference wins on Monday at the UNF Softball Complex.
The Lady Ospreys got a one-hit shutout in the opener from freshman Tori Ahern in a 4-0 win, before turning on the offensive jets in an 8-0 win.
"Those were two great games," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "We accomplished everything we wanted to offensively and defensively."
Ashley Parenteau continued her torrid pace at the plate, finishing the doubleheader 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run. She has now hit safely in the Lady Ospreys' last five games.
Caitlin Miller added to the offense with her first home run of the season in the nightcap. That topped off a 2-for-3 game at the plate and a 4-for-5 day overall.
UNF (12-4, 6-2 PBC) got on the board in the opener in the bottom of the third when Parenteau singled up the middle to drive home Gwen Williams. Parenteau brought home two more in the bottom of the fourth with her second-straight two-out single, bringing home Dyann Busse and Katie Field.
Miller finally completed the scoring in the sixth with a groundout that scored Kelli Rutenbar from third.
That was more than enough for Ahern (7-2), who faced one batter over the minimum in the win, not allowing a walk and only giving up a first inning single Colleen Leggieri. Ahern struck out 11 Lady Bearcats (16-16, 1-7 PBC) in the win.
UNF got its offense going early in the second game, scoring five runs in the opening frame. Williams topped off the inning with an RBI double to right-center that plated a pair of runs.
Williams finished the second game 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs and scored the final run of the contest in the bottom of the third.
Miller punctuated the third inning with a towering home run to left field, one batter after Alisha Phillips drove an Austin Murray pitch to the wall in center field.
Phillips (5-2) helped herself with a base hit and an RBI, while working her way out of a couple jams in the pitching circle in the fourth and fifth innings. She allowed only five hits and struck out three in the victory.
Murray (4-5) took the loss in game two, while Sheena Mason (4-5) allowed four runs, three earned, and struck out two in taking the opening-game loss.
UNF continues a busy week on Wednesday when it travels to Valdosta State for a pair of games at 4 p.m. The Lady Ospreys will follow that up with six games over the weekend at the Patriot Invitational in Florence, S.C.
