WOODSTOCK, Ga. - University of North Florida softball pitcher Tori Ahern continued her dominance in the pitching circle for the Lady Ospreys, defeating Kennesaw State 1-0 to help the Lady Ospreys earn a split in opening day play at the Kennesaw State Invitational.
UNF (21-5) lost its opening game of the day 5-2 to Alabama Huntsville.
"We came out flat in the first game, but came back strong in the second," UNF head coach Sonya Wilmoth said. "Tori threw a great game and really controlled their hitters."
Ahern only allowed a pair of hits to KSU catcher Cambria McKay in the victory, giving up two walks and striking out 11 Lady Owls. Ahern has not allowed a run - earned or unearned - in her last 37.2 innings of work.
Lady Osprey second baseman Gwen Williams supplied UNF all the offense it needed when she led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a home run to left center.
Williams collected one of the Lady Ospreys' four hits, with Ashley Parenteau, Christina Evans and Katie Field also collecting a hit.
Randalyn Rogers (1-1) didn't fair as well as Ahern in the Lady Ospreys' opener against Alabama Huntsville, surrendering four runs in the top of the second inning.
UNF scored a run in the first and one more in the seventh, but it wasn't to overcome the seventh-ranked Chargers.
Kelli Pitts came on in relief of Rogers, surrendering only one unearned run and striking out six.
Parenteau led UNF with a 2-for-4 game at the plate, driving in one of the team's two runs. Gwen Williams drove home UNF's first run of the game, playing Parenteau in the first inning.
UNF continues action in the KSU Invitational on Saturday, meeting up with Catawba at 10 a.m. before taking on Anderson at 4 p.m.
