Jefferson City, Tenn. (Nov. 12, 2004) - After battling for 103 scoreless, rain-soaked minutes on Friday, the Catawba College Lady Indians ended the Lady Osprey soccer team's hopes of a Southeast Region championship.
Catawba defeated the University of North Florida women's soccer team 1-0 in overtime in the first round of the NCAA Southeast Region tournament.
"It was a very, very even game," UNF head coach Mike Munch said. "We played very well, particularly in the second half."
UNF (13-5-3) played Catawba (16-1-3) to a 0-0 tie in regulation, just edging the Lady Indians in shots (10-9) and shots on goal (9-7).
But Catawba sophomore forward McKenzie Burman brought the game and the Lady Ospreys' season to a close at the 103:20 mark when she planted a goal in the back of the net. Burman scored on a running shot from inside the box, after taking a cross from the left side from senior midfielder Jennifer Lowe.
"The goal that they got was just a pretty goal," Munch said. "It's much better to get beat by a goal like that."
The Lady Ospreys entered the tournament seeded second, while Catawba was seeded third. With the victory, the Lady Indians advance to the regional final to face host Carson-Newman College, which defeated No. 4 seed Clayton State 3-2 on Friday.
The final will be played Sunday at noon.
