JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Oct. 30, 2004) - University of North Florida junior forward Ali Blochl and senior midfielder Diana Hemke teamed up for two scores on Saturday to give the Lady Osprey soccer team a 2-0 victory against Clayton College & State University to end the regular season.
The Peach Belt Conference win advances UNF to 11-4-2 overall, 6-2 in the PBC, while Clayton State falls to 11-4-1, 4-3-1 in conference play.
In the victory, North Florida's defense held leading PBC scorer Olaitan Yusuf to only two shots. Prior to Saturday's match, the freshman forward had scored 28 goals.
"We had a plan that we stuck to that made it difficult for her to do the things that she's used to doing, and it worked very well," UNF head coach Mike Munch said. "Our whole goal was not to give her any chances, and we really did that."
On the offensive side, the Lady Ospreys got on the board five minutes into the match when Hemke got a head on Blochl's corner kick, sending it past Clayton State keeper Judith Chime into the back of the net.
Blochl and Hemke combined again about 10 minutes into the second half when Blochl took a free kick from just outside the box, passing the ball to Hemke, who was open on the outside. Hemke blasted a shot through the Lady Lakers' bunched defense, just past Chime's reach.
"It was just a beautiful shot on Diana's part," Munch said. "Clayton really protected the middle on the free kick and let her have the shot from the outside, and she struck it very well."
The two scores give Hemke the team lead with eight goals for the season.
UNF finishes the regular season No. 3 in the PBC and will host a first-round PBC Tournament match next Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Lady Ospreys' likely opponent will be Lander University, one of only two Peach Belt teams to defeat UNF this season.
