SAVANNAH, Ga. (Feb. 9, 2005) - The University of North Florida women's basketball team shot just 29 percent and committed 30 turnovers in dropping their Peach Belt Conference game with Armstrong Atlantic State, 64-44, at AASU's Alumni Arena on Wednesday night.
UNF (9-13, 3-8 PBC) never found a rhythm offensively, hitting just 1-of-13 shots from 3-point range and getting only five points from junior guard Karli Knudsen, who had scored 20 or more points in UNF's last two games. Armstrong Atlantic (16-9, 6-5 PBC) also had a difficult time protecting the ball - committed 29 turnovers - but the Lady Pirates shot 44 percent for the game to help them maintain their sizable lead throughout.
Audosha Kelly scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half, and Jasmine Herron also added 12 points - all in the first half - to lead the Lady Pirates. Brittney Davis led UNF with 11 points and nine rebounds.
"We didn't play with a lot of energy the first 20 minutes," UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "Our defensive transition wasn't good, and they hit a couple of big (3-pointers) that got us down early. We turned the ball over 30 times against a team that didn't press us. When you do that and shoot 29 percent, it is going to be tough to beat anybody."
Despite a lackluster start by UNF, the teams battled back and forth early before a 9-2 run by Armstrong State stretched its lead to 27-14 with 3:52 to play before halftime. Four points from Herron in the final minute pushed that margin to 36-20 at the intermission.
In the second half, the Lady Pirates used a 9-0 run out of the gates to stretch their lead to 45-20 with 15:01 to play, and UNF could never recover. The Lady Ospreys sliced the AASU lead to 14 points with 4:41 to play (55-41) but could never get closer.
Late in the game, senior center Brittney Davis suffered a knee injury. She will be examined further in Jacksonville to determine the extent of the damage.
UNF returns to action on Saturday against Kennesaw State at UNF Arena in a Peach Belt doubleheader. The Lady Ospreys will play at 2 p.m., with the UNF men to play Kennesaw State at 4 p.m. Both games can be heard locally on WIOJ-AM 1010 and via the World Wide Web at www.unf.edu/sports.
