JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Dec. 31, 2004) - The University of North Florida women's basketball team finished the Lady Osprey New Year's Classic with an 0-2 mark after falling to Rollins College 54-45 at UNF Arena Friday.
The victory gave Rollins (9-2) a 2-0 mark at the Classic after the Tars defeated Edward Waters Thursday. UNF (6-5) lost Florida Tech Thursday 50-49.
"We're struggling a little offensively," UNF coach Mary Tappmeyer said. "Rollins has a lot of weapons and we're a little hampered injury wise. We didn't schedule anybody easy in non-conference to prepare us for conference play."
Rollins' Nicole Warder led all scorers with 15 points, hitting several free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. Tamara Hubbard, Alana Mountfield and Brittney Davis led UNF with seven points apiece.
The Lady Ospreys held a 17-10 advantage in the first half, but found themselves up by one at the half, 21-20. Sarah Wallace sparked UNF early with a pair of 3-pointers, while Hubbard nailed a 3-pointer, as UNF scored its first nine points beyond the 3-point arc.
UNF started to look inside in the second half, leaning on Davis for points in the lane. Davis finished 3-of-4 from the field, but made only 1-of-6 shots from the free throw line.
The Lady Ospreys held a 29-25 lead after freshman Anna Haberlein hit a baseline jumper. Rollins rallied from there and surged ahead on a couple of Sally Johnston baskets, her only two of the contest.
Davis led all players with eight rebounds, while Warder and Jennifer Catti pulled down five apiece for Rollins. UNF lost the battle of the boards for the first time this season, pulling down 33 compared to 36 for the Tars.
Peach Belt Conference play starts next week for the Lady Ospreys, when they take on Clayton State Jan. 5 at 5:30 p.m.
