MOBILE, Ala. (Dec. 14, 2005) - The University of North Florida women's basketball team was held to its lowest point output in team history on Wednesday night when it fell to South Alabama 62-29 at the Mitchell Center in Mobile, Ala.
UNF (1-5) scored 13 points in the opening half and shot 24.4 percent for the game, losing its fifth contest in a row. South Alabama moved to 4-3 with the win.
Whitney Woodard and JoAnn Williams both scored in double figures for the Lady Jaguars, as Woodard finished the game with 13 points, while Williams scored 12. UNF did manage to keep Williams below her season average of 17.3 points a game.
Andrea Dill and Jackie Beik each finished with six points to lead the Lady Ospreys. Beik also tied Woodard for a game-high with seven rebounds.
The Lady Ospreys and South Alabama engaged in a defensive battle in the opening half of play, as USA broke open a 4-4 game on a Samantha McDole layup with 12:45 to play in the opening half. The Lady Jaguars went on a 7-0 run from there and never trailed again. UNF cut the lead to 23-13 at the half thanks to back-to-back baskets from C.C. Woolfolk. After hitting a driving layup in the lane, Woolfolk buried a jumper with her foot on the 3-point line to complete the scoring in the opening half.
UNF - which battled foul trouble most of the second half - never got on track, as Dill, Jennifer Guldager and Antoinette Reames all fouled out of the game.
South Alabama held UNF to only a Jennifer Bowen free throw in the first 8:05 of the second half, going on a 15-1 run to pull away for good.
USA out-rebounded the Lady Ospreys 44-32, pulling down 14 offensive rebounds compared to seven for UNF. The Lady Ospreys finished the game with 28 turnovers, while South Alabama had 14. North Florida had five blocks on the night, led by Beik, who had two.
UNF will finally get a taste of life on its home court for the first time this season when it hosts Bethune- Cookman on Friday at 7 p.m. This will be the second meeting between the schools this year, with BCC winning the first meeting 55-53. Live audio of the game can be heard at www.unfospreys.com.
