FREEPORT, Bahamas - Iowa State University used its superior height advantage to propel itself past the University of North Florida, 74-48 on Saturday in the third place game of the Freeport Bracket of the Bahamas Junkanoo Jam.
UNF (1-3) finished the tournament 0-2 after opening up with a loss to Rutgers on Friday.
Iowa State (2-1) out-rebounded the Lady Ospreys 50-38, while Cyclone center Brittany Wilkins led all players with 26 points.
UNF tried to counter Iowa State's inside presence with its perimeter game, hitting eight 3-pointers on the night. Karli Knudsen set the pace for the Lady Ospreys, hitting three shots beyond the arc, and finishing the game with 11 points.
Alana Mountfield led the Lady Ospreys with 14 points. Both she and Knudsen set season highs in points.
UNF had an early 3-2 advantage after an Andrea Dill 3-pointer, but Iowa State went on to score eight straight, as UNF started 1-of-7 from the field.
To compound matters, UNF lost starting point guard Kayla Sheldon in the first 10 minutes of play after she re-aggravated a right knee injury. Knudsen came off the bench to replace Sheldon and provided the Lady Ospreys with five quick points.
Iowa State eventually took a 19-point lead before UNF trimmed that deficit to 13 by the half. Most of that damage was done on a 7-0 run that cut the Cyclones advantage to 36-25. Anna Haberlein squeezed a couple of made jumpers around a Mountfield 3-pointer during the run.
Nine different Lady Ospreys scored during the opening half of play, led by Knudsen and Mountfield, who each had five.
UNF scored six points in the first eight minutes of the second half, as Iowa State opened with a 14-6 run and kept pulling away from there.
Wilkins (26 pts./10 reb.) and Megan Ronhovde (14 pts./12 reb.) each finished with double-doubles for the Cyclones. Haberlein was UNF's third leading scorer, finishing the game with six points. Jackie Beik led the Lady Ospreys in rebounds for the second night in a row, pulling down six.
The Lady Ospreys will get an extra day in the Bahamas before heading home on Monday to prepare for their conference opener on Dec. 1 at Florida Atlantic.
