JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - University of North Florida freshman Zeynep Meric helped lead her team to a 135-86 victory over New Orleans on Saturday at the UNF Aquatics Center.
Meric won the 1000-freestyle and 500-freestyle events and took third in the 200-butterfly to help the Lady Ospreys improve to 2-1 on the season.
The win was UNF's second in a row and improved the team's record at home to 2-0 this year.
New Orleans won the opening event of the meet - the 400-medley relay - when the team of Tory Sciortino, Briana Taylor, Cathryn Garvey and Lindsey Townsend finished in a time of 4:06.35. They bettered UNF's team of Dana Constantino, Monique Salles-Cunha, Alison Marshall and Marie Yeager (4:08.20).
Zeynep Meric captured UNF's first win of the afternoon one event later in the 1000-freestyle when she finished in a time of 10:50.51. Meric took over in lap 13 of the race and never looked back from there, cruising to a win by better than five seconds over New Orleans' Sarah Gros.
The third race of the day proved to be the most competitive. UNF's Jacqui Beals captured the 200-freestyle in a time of 1:59.09. The UNF tandem of Savannah Codd (1:59.11) and Scotti Williams (1:59.49) pushed Beals the whole race, finishing second and third respectively.
Meric won her second race of the day when she beat out Beals in the 500-freestyle. The two UNF swimmers were neck and neck the entire race, with Meric (5:19.47) edging out Beals (5:19.60) on the last lap.
Krysten Nemecek secured the meet for UNF with a win in the 200-breastsroke. She finished in a time of 2:29.36.
The Lady Ospreys are back in action on Dec. 10, when they travel to Lakeland, Fla., to take on Saint Leo and Florida Southern.
