MACON, Ga. - The Atlantic Sun Conference awarded the 2015-16 Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award to North Florida's senior guard Trent Mackey, announced Tuesday by the conference office. Mackey is joined by four other men's basketball student-athletes on the All-Academic Team.
Mackey, a two-time All-Academic selections, boasts a 3.86 cumulative GPA as a graduate student in General Business and leads the conference in three-pointer made this season with 102 on 46.2 percent shooting from deep. He sits 18th in the A-Sun for scoring at 12.2 PPG as he helped the Ospreys to the No. 1 seed in the A-Sun Championship for the second-straight season.
The Tampa, Fla. native is one of 10 players in A-Sun history to make 100 or more three's in a season. Mackey joins teammate Demarcus Daniels to become the first North Florida student-athlete to land two A-Sun All-Academic Men's Basketball honors and the first from UNF to win the Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolade.
"Having success off the court is a crucial part of our culture both in the classroom and community," said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. "Trent Mackey transferred here with the intent to not only achieve his undergraduate degree, but also be well on his way to a MBA. With that kind of direction and drive it's not surprising that he was awarded such a prestigious honor. From the time we started to recruit him, Demarcus had a clear understanding and plan for his post college endeavors giving him that necessary edge to compete at a high level in all facets of his life. These honors are another great reflection on our program and the types of student-athletes we want to have join us."
The All-Academic Team recognizes student-athletes who excel both on the field and in the classroom and exemplify the A-Sun's mission of Building Winners for Life. All the members of the team boast a 3.30 cumulative grade point average or better and participated in at least half of their team's games.
