Box Score (PDF)JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida baseball team (2-1) erased a four-run deficit and scored seven runs in their final three turns at the plate to secure a 10-7, series-clinching win over George Washington (1-2).
The Ospreys used the power of the long ball to ignite a five-run sixth inning. Redshirt senior
Nick Karmeris launched his first home run of the spring over the right field wall to lead off the frame. Two batters later,
Alex Merritt rung a fastball off the scoreboard in left field for a two-run shot and pulled the Ospreys within a run at 7-6.
With two outs in the inning,
Corbin Olmstead tied the game with his second RBI of the young season, scoring
Dakota Higdon. The Ospreys took the lead for good when
Patrick Ervin laid down a perfectly placed bunt up the third base line for an infield single, scoring Olmstead.
Olmstead flipped his role from batter to pitcher in the bottom of the eighth and recorded a four-out save, not allowing a hit and striking out one. The save is his 16
th of his career, tying Tyler Stohr (2007-08) for the most in the school's Division I era (2006-present).
Higdon continued an impressive start to the season with two more hits, two RBIs and a run scored in today's contest. He is batting a team-best, .571 (4-for-7) with three runs scored and two RBIs through three games. Senior catcher
Keith Skinner had his second extra-base hit in as many days, finishing the day, 2-for-5 with an RBI. He kept the two-out, sixth inning rally alive with a double that moved the go-ahead run to third.
Newcomers
Chris Thibideau and
Chris Berry each scored twice in the contest. Thibideau put forth his second two-hit effort of the weekend going 2-for-5 in the six hole.
Freshman
Austin Drury came on in relief in the top of the sixth inning and went on to toss two innings of shutout baseball for his first collegiate win. He entered the game with two runners in scoring position and struck out pinch hitter Matt Consentino to end the Colonial threat. He struck out three of the seven batters he faced.
George Washington was in control of the game early after a five-run, third inning. It marked the second time in the series they put up a five spot to take the lead. Kevin Mahala cracked his first home run of the year in the inning and finished the day, 4-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored.
The Ospreys will be home on Tuesday night to host Savannah State at Harmon Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
