MACON, Ga. - Post players dominated the Atlantic Sun Men's Basketball Weekly Awards as North Florida's Demarcus Daniels & USC Upstate's Michael Buchanan earned their first-ever A-Sun Player of the Week honors, while Lipscomb freshman forward Eli Pepper collected his second career Newcomer of the Week honor, announced on Monday by the league office.
Daniels guided the Ospreys to a 2-0 start in league play with two 22-point efforts coming against Stetson and rival Jacksonville. The senior foward began the week with 22 points, nine rebounds and two blocks in a 97-79 victory at Stetson before tallying his first career double-double in the River City Rumble with 22 points, 10 rebounds to go along with three blocks. For the week, Daniels shot 74.1 percent from the floor on 20-of-27.
"When guys are putting in the work on a consistent level combines with unselfish teammates your program is recognized with these types of awards," said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. "BaeBae has really embraced his role of not only coming off the bench, but also scoring from all areas on the floor highlighted by his becoming an inside presence for us. This is just another example of how much these guys truly love each other and understand what it takes to be successful."
Buchanan was a force down low for the Spartans as Upstate extended its league-best win streak to four games. The junior center averaged 18.5 PPG, 8.5 RPG & 4.5 APG in victories against North Carolina A&T and NJIT. The Las Vegas native opened the week with his season's first double-double on 17 points, 10 rebounds with five assists. Against one of the A-Sun preseason favorites, Buchanan recorded the game-winning shot with 0.4 seconds remaining to finish with 20 points, seven boards and four assists.
Pepper set career-highs in points and rebounds in Lipscomb's lone game against Kennesaw State as the freshman forward registered 22 points and 17 rebounds. Twelve of his 17 rebounds came on the offensive end, while he scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half. It marked his first career double-double and 20-point game.
