Box Score (PDF)JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – North Florida (28-12) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and belted three home runs in a 13-3 win over Florida A&M (14-21). With a predetermined 10-run rule agreed on before the game, the game ended in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The reigning Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week,
Corbin Olmstead had a big day at the plate, belting two home runs and tied a career-best with six RBIs. The two-way player was the designated hitter in tonight's contest and finished the day 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored.
Freshman
Zach Drury made his first collegiate start on the mound and was dominant from the first pitch. The right-hander fanned four of the first six batters he faced. His only base runner was a 3-2 walk to Robby Jolley in the third inning. Drury earned his first career win in only his fourth appearance of the season.
The no-hit bid ended in the top of the sixth. Reliever
John Suskauer pitched a scoreless fifth inning and recorded the first out in the sixth before an infield single in the hole between shortstop and third put a halt to the hopes of the no-no. Two-straight hits ensued, including a three-run home run by Ryan Kennedy.
Redshirt sophomore
Alex Smith came on to pitch the final inning and a third. He struck out three of the four batters he faced and also did not allow a hit. To compliment the superb effort by the Osprey pitching staff, shortstop
Kyle Brooks made two tremendous plays to preserve the no-hitter. A diving play ranging to his left in the fourth as well as another diving stab to start a double play in the fifth kept the Rattlers hitless.
Pinch-hitter
Alex Merritt hit the walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to create the 10-run margin. It was the second time this season Merritt has come off the bench to hit a home run.
Senior
Ryan Roberson was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored. He now has 38 RBIs on the season which is the third most in the Atlantic Sun.
Donnie Dewees' double in the bottom of the fourth extended his hit streak to 16 games, tying a season and career best. He also scored two runs to add to his nation-leading, 54 runs scored.
The first of Olmstead's two home runs highlighted a five run first inning for the Ospreys. Roberson drove in two more runs in the second inning and the Ospreys were quickly out to a 9-0 lead. Florida A&M starting pitcher, David Ogilvie exited in the first inning after not recording an out through five batters. He was charged with four of the five runs after walking three and surrendering two hits.
