MACON, Ga. – The No. 12-ranked North Florida golf team collected all three of the Atlantic Sun Conference's major postseason awards and had all five of its travel squad members garner All-Conference honors as voted by the league's head coaches and announced by the conference office.
After winning the program's second-ever Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Golf Championship on Apr. 16-18, the Ospreys continued their strong showing on the awards stand earning Golfer of the Year (Sean Dale), Freshman of the Year (Joey Petronio) and Coach of the Year (Scott Schroeder) accolades.
Dale, a junior, was voted the 2012 A-Sun Golfer of the Year by the league coaches for the second time in his career having also claimed the award in 2010. The latest recognition earns him the distinction of being one of only five golfers in league history to earn the honor twice in their careers. The Jacksonville, Fla. native was also one of two unanimous choices to the All-Conference First Team. Dale, who is currently listed 14th in the Golfweek rankings, leads UNF with a 71.97 stroke average and posted five top three finishes this season including a pair of tournament titles. He has posted runner-up finishes in each of his last two events.
Petronio, a native of Orlando, Fla., became the third Osprey to be named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year. The UNF rookie played in every event for the team boasting a 73.97 stroke average and a pair of Top 10 finishes. Petronio won the individual title at the Gary Koch Invitational in April and followed that up with an 11th-place tie at the A-Sun Championships.
“It has been a great year for Sean and Joey,” said Schroeder. “Sean winning Golfer of the Year for a second time is a great accomplishment. It's always nice to have the Freshman of the Year because that means we have a good player for three more years. I am extremely proud of both these young men and glad to see their hard work and commitment has paid off for them.”
For Schroeder, it marked his third A-Sun Coach of the Year plaque in seven seasons at the helm of the Ospreys. He earned the award in 2008 and 2010 and is now tied for second-most honors in conference history.
“It is always a privilege and an honor to be voted Coach of the Year by your peers,” added Schroeder. “It is usually a reflection and reward for having a good season so I have to thank the players for putting in the work this year in helping the team earn this award for the program.”
Joining Dale on the first team from UNF was Kevin Phelan and Kevin Aylwin. For Phelan it marks his third all-conference honor, and both players adorn the first team for the second-consecutive season. Aylwin (46th) and Phelan (63rd) are both currently ranked in the Top 100 by Golfweek.
Stetson's Sam Ryder was the other unanimous choice to the first squad after he captured the 2012 A-Sun Championship Individual Medalist honor, while Kennesaw State's Matt Nagy earned the remaining spot on the first team.
ETSU's Rhys Enoch headlined the second team as the redshirt-senior picked up his fourth A-Sun All-Conference honor, becoming only fourth player in league history to achieve that feat. Accompanying Enoch on the second team was FGCU's Brandon Pena and KSU's Jeff Karlsson. Making the all-conference team for the first time were Petronio and Mercer's James Beale.
FGCU's Jack Hernandez and Petronio were unanimous choices to the All-Freshmen Team and were joined by UNF's MJ Maguire, Kennesaw State's Jimmy Beck and ETSU's Scott Gibson.
“It was also great to have both Kevins (Aylwin/Phelan) make first team all-conference and for MJ (Maguire) to be picked to the All-Freshman squad. It is has been a great year to this point and we look forward to continue playing well in the postseason.”
North Florida will next compete at an NCAA Regional on May 17-19 at a to-be-announced location. The NCAA golf selection announcement is scheduled for Monday, May 7 at 6 p.m.
