BRASELTON, Ga. – The No.14-ranked University of North Florida golf team fired a two-under-par 286 Tuesday widening their lead to 10 strokes over the field after 36 holes of play at the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship at the Chateau Elan Legends Course.
UNF junior Sean Dale continues to lead the individual medalist competition after a second round three-under 69 while senior teammate Kevin Aylwin fired the low round of the tournament, a five-under 67, to move into second place just two strokes behind Dale heading into the final round.
“Kevin and Sean really carried us today,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “As a whole, the scores were higher today but a good score was out there to be made if you played well. Our focus tomorrow is to have all five players get off to solid starts and then finish the round strong as we battle to win a conference championship.”
Dale, with a two-day total of 137 (-7), seeks his third individual title of the season while Aylwin, at 135 (-5), looks to capture the first medalist honor of his collegiate career.
In addition to UNF's top-of-the-chart duo, freshman MJ Maguire and junior Kevin Phelan are also among the top 15 in the individual standings. Maguire is in 13th at 148 (+4) after shooting a second straight 74 and Phelan is tied for 14th at 149 (+5) following a second day 76. Freshman Joey Petronio posted a 76 on Tuesday and is tied for 31st at 153 to round out the lineup for the Ospreys.
North Florida remains the only team under-par at the event with a 36-hole tally of 573 (-3) and hold a commanding double-digit lead with one round remaining over the current second-place tandem of ETSU and Kennesaw State in a tie at 583. FGCU is currently fourth at 596 followed by Mercer (600), USC Upstate (601), Stetson (602), Jacksonville (607), Lipscomb (614) and Belmont (615).
A win for UNF would mark just the second A-Sun Championship for the program with the only previous title coming in 2008. The Ospreys are also looking to have their first individual medalist at the conference championship. In addition, North Florida could regain the barrel in the River City Rumble with a UNF finish ahead of Jacksonville.
UNF will be paired with Kennesaw State and ETSU in Wednesday's final round with tee times set between 8:45-9:21 a.m. Live scoring results are available online at Golfstat.com.
