JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida track and field teams will begin their 2012 outdoor season at home this weekend, as they play host to the UNF Spring Break Invite on March 2-3 at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla.
Both the men and women are coming off top-five finishes at the Atlantic Sun Indoor Track Championships and will be looking to improve on those performances as they move into the outdoor portion of their schedule.
On the men's side, the distance runners will look to lead the way, as senior Cameron Dickerson and junior James Post captured gold medals at the A-Sun Indoor Championships in the 800m and mile, respectively. Both will be running the 1500m on their home track this weekend.
Sophomore David Shepherd will look to build on his second-consecutive A-Sun indoor pole vault title as well. Shepherd holds both the indoor and outdoor school records in the event.
The women's team has also been led by their distance competitors in recent meets. Senior Erin Nixon has been the most decorated, grabbing three top-five finishes at the A-Sun Indoor Championships and taking first place in five of her seven indoor races. Juniors Shelby Kittrell and Meggie Emons will also look to contribute.
Sophomore Brianna Frazier, who was named the Most Valuable Performer at the A-Sun Indoor Championships, will be the sole UNF athlete traveling to Blacksburg, Va. to compete in the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier at Rector Field House and will be running in the 200m and 400m on Saturday.
