DULUTH, Ga. – No. 10-ranked North Florida fired an eight-under 280 Tuesday to hold off a hard-charging No. 24 Chattanooga and claim the team championship in the inaugural AutoTrader.Com Collegiate Classic at Berkeley Hills Country Club.
The Ospreys, who finished the 54-hole event with a nine-under 855, outlasted the Mocs by two shots. A trio of UNF linksters placed among the Top 10 individuals led by Sean Dale's third-place finish and including a fifth-place mark for Kevin Aylwin and seventh-place tie for Kevin Phelan.
“This was definitely a total team win,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “Chattanooga played really well and fortunately we were able to hold them off. Sean (Dale) played a really great round and the rest of the guys played solid all day. This was an impressive win by the guys today.”
Dale, the 2010 Atlantic Sun Golfer of the Year, matched his career low round with a tournament best six-under 66 to shoot a 210 (-6). The junior collected seven birdies on the day and a bogey on the 17th hole was his lone blemish of the round. Phelan, a two-time All-ASun performer, was bogey-free until the final hole shooting a two-under 70 in the final round for a 215 (-1) total.
Aylwin, a 2011 All-ASun golfer, boasted a 213 (-3) tally including his one-under 71 in the final round. The senior's round on Tuesday was highlighted by an eagle on the 10th and birdies on three of his last six holes of play.
Senior Joe Byun and freshman Joey Petronio rounded out the day's performance with matching scores of one-over 73. Byun finished just outside the Top 10, earning an 11th-place finish with a three-day total of one-over 217, while Petronio tied for 29th at 224 (+8).
Chattanooga finished at 857, featuring a tournament low round of nine-under 279 on the final day. East Carolina was third at 870 followed by Minnesota (872), Georgia Southern (884), Georgia State (884), Kentucky (892), UNC Greensboro (893), Furman(896), Wofford (897), VCU (915) and Jacksonville (915).
ECU's Harold Varner earned the individual medalist title with a three-round 208 (-8), edging Chattanooga's Steven Fox by one stroke.
North Florida makes a quick turnaround as the Ospreys next compete Oct. 23-25 at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Fla.
