Ospreys Drop 4-3 Overtime Decision at St. Mary's in Women's Soccer

MORAGO, Calif. – The University of North Florida women's soccer team twice rallied to force a tie before suffering a tough 4-3 loss in overtime against St. Mary's College Sunday evening at St. Mary's Stadium.
Sophomore Michele Larrinaga tallied a pair of goals in pacing the Ospreys (0-3) attack. Junior Shannon Healy also posted her first goal of the season for UNF.
Jordan Marada put Saint Mary's ahead 1-0 just 2:10 into the contest. Marada got a pass from Alyssa Donaik, and finished the shot from 18 yards out to an open net. Doniak added to the Gaels lead in the 15th minute with Marada returning the favor with an assist.
The Osprey's offense refused to rallying with a pair of goals in the final 3:42 seconds of the first half. Larrinaga scored both goals for UNF, the first at 41:18 and the second with just 23 seconds left in the period. Larrinaga's first score came on a rebound of a Thea Linkfield shot attempt which she put away for the easy finish. Her second goal came when the SMC goalkeeper misplayed a ball, allowing Larrinaga to easily collect it and dribble into the open net, tying the game at 2-2.
“We played well against a very good team,” said UNF head coach Linda Hamilton. “I definitely felt like me made some improvements from Friday's game. I was very proud of our effort especially coming back to tie the game twice. We just need to find a way to get the win.”
SMC regained its lead in the 63rd minute when Christina Tognetti fired a left-footed shot inside the far post. The lead was short-lived, as UNF added a goal by Healy on a free kick from 20 yards out at 68:03, knotting the score at 3-3.
The game headed into overtime where Melinda Madden scored the game clincher at the 6:11 mark converting on a set-piece pass delivered into the box by Brooke Mayo.
Saint Mary's outshot North Florida 12-6, with half of the Gaels shots on goal, while all six shots by the Ospreys were on frame.
North Florida continues its season-opening five match road stretch Friday night (Sept. 3) at Presbyterian.
