JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team kicks off the 2010 season with an exhibition match against Middle Georgia on Thursday, Aug. 26 at 6 p.m. at the UNF Practice Soccer Field. Admission to the match is free of charge.
The 2010 season marks the 20th year of men's soccer at UNF. In its first year being eligible for the postseason at the Division I level, the University of North Florida men's soccer team advanced to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, hosting a first-round match. The Ospreys finished the season 4-13-1, but posted a 4-4-1 A-Sun record to finish the 2009 season in fourth place.
Earlier this month, the Atlantic Sun Conference released its 2010 preseason men's soccer honors and UNF's Adam O'Neill was named to the team. In addition, the Ospreys were picked eighth in the preseason poll as voted on by the league's coaches.
Last season, O'Neill led the team in nearly every statistical category. The senior led the team with 13 points, of which nine points came in A-Sun play. He had a team-best six goals with four goals in conference, including a pair of match-winning goals. The forward led the team in shots and shots on goal. O'Neill scored the match-winning goals against Stetson and USC Upstate. In addition, he was third on the team in assists.
O'Neill was named Second Team All-Atlantic Sun Conference as a sophomore and a junior, as well as a member of the 2007 All-Freshman team.
O'Neill joins a solid mix of veterans and newcomers for the 2010 season. The Ospreys welcome back 13 letterwinners off of last year's team, including five starters. In addition, North Florida boasts 11 newcomers who should make an immediate impact this season.
Last season, the Ospreys claimed a 2-0 victory over Middle Georgia in the final exhibition match of the 2009 season. Calvin Lowe scored the match-winning goal in the 25th minute of the match and UNF added a goal in the 38th minute to secure the victory.
Andrew Calise worked the second half of the game at goal, making a pair of saves to preserve the shutout.
