PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Freshman Kevin Phelan shot par or better – including three birdies – on 12 holes to finish the second round of the 110th U.S. Open with a 4-over, 75 on Friday at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, Calif.
“Kevin had a wonderful experience,” said UNF head golf coach Scott Schroeder. “It was a pleasure to watch him play in the U.S. Open. At 19 years old, he really handled himself like a true professional. There were probably 5 to 6,000 people watching him at times today and it was neat to watch a bunch of people, who didn't know him, pulling for him as a young amateur golfer.”
Phelan, who was competing in his first major, started the day on No.10 and hit his first birdie of the Open on the 14th hole after double bogeying No. 14 in the first round. Phelan's other two birdies of the round came on back-to-back holes at five and six.
The 2010 Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year, finished the U.S. Open with a 16-over, 158 (83-75), missing the cut. Leading the field after the first two rounds is Graeme McDowell with a 3-under, 139 (71-68). Ernie Els, Dustin Johnson, Ryo Ishikawa and Phil Mickelson are tied for second with 1-under, 141s.
