JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior Anne DelBovo and freshman Jasmine Jackson picked up Atlantic Sun Third Team All-Conference awards with their third place finishes for the University of North Florida in the 2010 A-Sun Outdoor Track and Field Championships today at Hodges Stadium.
North Florida finished day one in third with 22 points. The Ospreys are behind Jacksonville in second with 44 points and Kennesaw State in first with 73.5 points. The men finished seventh with seven points recorded on the day.
DelBovo, the A-Sun pole vault champion last season, came out today and again stood on the winner's podium as an all-conference recipient. Though not finishing first, DelBovo is still tied for UNF's school record in the pole vault with a height of 3.80m.
Jackson broke her personal record with a third place finish in the long jump (5.62m), receiving her first A-Sun award as an Osprey. Freshman Jennifer Smyth also leaped for a personal best of 5.55m in the long jump, finishing in fifth place. Sophomore Andrea Bridges also improved on her season with a personal best 5.12m jump for ninth place.
“Today was a pretty mixed bag for us,” said head coach Mark VanAlstyne. “We had a couple of really good performances with Jasmine Jackson and Jennifer Smythe in the long jump. On the flip side, we had some problems in the pole vault which happens sometimes in a technical event. We didn't' get the points we expected there. On the whole, I think we left ourselves with some ground to make up on day two.”
In the 100m dash, senior Charisma Anderson finished third in heat one of the preliminaries with a season best time of 11.92. Jackson, along with Anderson qualified for tomorrow's race, crossing the line in second place in her heat with a time of 12.10, just shy of her season best 12.06.
Jackson also qualified for the 100m hurdles finals with a time of 14.89. The Vero Beach, Fla. native recorded a 14.75 at the FSU Relays earlier in the season.
Sophomore Kayla Mobley led the way in the shot put with a 12.11m throw, landing her in eighth place. Freshman Ann Demi rounded out the top 10 with her tenth place throw of 11.45m.
On the men's side senior Sammy Palmer put up a UNF best in the 10,000m this season finishing seventh with a time of 32:22.50.
Sophomore Noah Thompson vaulted a season best 4.52m, but took fifth in the event. Freshman Taylor Britton broke his personal record with a height of 4.37m for an eighth place finish.
Tomorrow's competition will begin at 9 a.m. with the men's decathlon followed by the start of the men's high jump, women's discus throw and triple jump at 3:30 p.m. The day will end with women's 4x400m relay at 8:45, before the championship presentation
