UNF Golfers Rally in Third Round to Win BancorpSouth Intercollegiate

MADISON, Miss. – After being down seven strokes following the second round, the University of North Florida golf team shot 278 in the third round and finished with an 18-under, 846 (286-282-278) in the tournament to defeat Florida by one stroke on Tuesday at the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate, hosted by Ole Miss at the Reunion Golf and Country Club in Madison, Miss.
All five players shot under par for the Ospreys in the third round. Leading the team were seniors J.C. Horne and Jordan Gibb who finished tied for fourth with 5-under, 211s. Horne shot 69-73-68 while Gibb posted scores of 71-69-71 over the three rounds.
Sophomore Sean Dale finished just behind Horne and Gibb with a 4-under, 212 (75-68-69) for sixth place. Freshman Kevin Phelan also placed in the top-10, finishing ninth with a 2-under 214 (71-72-71).
“We played great today,” said head coach Scott Schroeder. “All five guys broke par and I could go on and on about the great things done by the guys today. To beat Florida by a shot is a great win when you start the day seven back. We now have to get ready to win a conference championship.”
Rounding out the scoring for the Ospreys was freshman Joe Byun with a 5-over 221 (78-74-69), finishing tied for 32nd.
Florida shot a 17-under, 847 (272-289-286) while host team Ole Miss shot a 3-under, 861 (281-285-295) to finish third. Florida is currently 18th in the Golfstat.com index and 10th in the Golfweek/Sangarin rankings and Ole Miss is 43rd in Golfstat.com index and 44th in the Golfweek/Sangarin rankings.
In addition to North Florida, Florida and the host school, Ole Miss, the 15-team field also included Central Florida, Jackson State, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Mississippi State, Rice, Southern Miss., Santa Clara, South Alabama, SE Louisiana, UAB and Vanderbilt
UNF is ranked in both national rankings, sitting 22nd in both the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and the Golfstat.com index. Dale leads North Florida with a No. 15 national ranking in Golfstat.com and 20th in Golfweek.
The Ospreys will return to the course, April 19-21 at the Atlantic Sun Championships, held at Chateau Elan Golf Club and Resort in Braselton, Ga.
