JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida head men's basketball coach Matthew Driscoll announces the signing of Jimmy Williams to the team for the 2010-11 season.
“Jimmy came to us with high recommendations as both a person and player,” said Driscoll. “He should fit in immediately with our program. He was an all-freshman league player in the MEAC which means he has put it in the books at this level. Jimmy brings a lot of versatility and toughness that we are excited to coach.”
Williams, a 6-4 guard transfer from Iowa Western Community College, appeared in 21 games for the Reivers as a sophomore last season. He shot 52-percent from the field, averaging 6.1 points per game. He also tallied 4.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game.
The East Dublin, Ga. native played at South Carolina State during his freshman season where he was third on the team in scoring with 8.6 points per game, shooting 48.2-percent from the field. He had a team high 84 assists during the season and led the team with 34 steals while pulling down 4.6 rebounds per game. As a freshman he started in 24 of the 31 games in which he appeared and earned All-MEAC Rookie Team honors.
"The coaches are great," said Williams. "I could tell that they really cared about the players and I really enjoyed my visit. I felt that I had a good connection with the players and that I would enjoy being a part of the team with those guys. I really feel that UNF is at a place as a team that it has a good chance of making it to the NCAA tournament. The business program at UNF also appealed to me, it is an excellent program. Playing at UNF will also get me back closer to home and I am looking forward to being closer to my family in Georgia."
Williams attended East Laurens High School and earned Georgia AA All-State honors his senior season and was named the Middle Georgia Player of the Year. During his final season, he averaged 14 points, 11.3 assists and 9.0 rebounds per game. He helped to lead the Falcons to a 30-2 record and the Georgia state title game.
