UNF Softball Opens Conference Play Wednesday at Stetson

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida softball team opens up Atlantic Sun Conference play with a doubleheader against Stetson starting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17, in DeLand, Fla.

The Ospreys are 10-15 on the season and 7-3 in the month of March. They recently went on a five-game winning streak that spanned from the Buzz Classic tournament (March 5) to their first game against Memphis (March 10).

During the month of March four players are hitting over .300. Leading the pack is Britanie Block who is hitting .394 with 11 doubles, tied for first in the conference. Senior Airen Payne is sitting second with a .385 batting average and two RBI that helped lift UNF over Delaware State and Winthrop. Freshman Jackie Reese (.364 BA) has produced an .818 slugging percentage and three home runs this month. The fourth player is junior Caroline Torre with a .313 batting average.

In the Buzz Classic, the Ospreys finished third out of the 22 teams that competed. Winthrop finished second but UNF later defeated the Eagles in their own tournament last weekend, 3-0, in Rock Hill, S.C.

The Ospreys finished the Winthrop Tournament 2-1, with senior pitcher Devyn Findley (8-8) tossing a no-hitter through six innings in the Winthrop win, giving-up no runs on one hit and registering 13 K's. Torre leads the team in RBI (16) and was voted to the All-Tournament Team at Winthrop with three hits and two RBI over the weekend.

UNF heads to DeLand, Fla. to play a Stetson team (15-11 overall, 14-11 at home) who has only left their home field once this year. While the Ospreys have been traveling to tournaments, the Hatters have been hosting their own, finishing their fifth tournament of the season at home.

Stetson played Yale on Sunday and Monday, winning both games 8-1 and 8-0, respectively.

Hatter Nicole Peltz threw a one-hitter for her first complete game shutout of her career and senior first baseman/pitcher Amanda Lindsey hit a homerun to help down Yale on Monday.

Currently, Lindsey is second in the A-Sun with 11 wins and third in ERA (0.88). Lindsey also tops the team with a .380 batting average, homeruns (5) and is tied for first in the conference in walks (20).
