Teams faced challenging schedules this past season
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The men's and women's basketball teams took on all comers this past season, playing a very challenging 2009-10 schedule.
The two teams faced 14 teams, in a combined 20 games, who earned invitations to postseason play. Each team faced seven of those teams in 10 total games, meaning about a third of each team's schedule was against tournament teams.
The men faced three teams who are participating in the NCAA Tournament in A-Sun Tournament Champion ETSU (twice), Marquette and Notre Dame. The Ospreys also battled three NIT teams in crosstown rival JU (three times), Northwestern and Illinois State. UNF also took on Southern Miss who is in the CollegeInsider.com Basketball Tournament. North Florida defeated the Golden Eagles 53-46 in the championship game of the South Mississippi Christmas Classic.
"Competing against the best prepares you for the league and the postseason," said men's head coach Matthew Driscoll. "We will continue to build a strong non-conference schedule giving us the appropriate mind set entering the most important aspect of the season, league play, which allows us to compete for championships."
The women took on two teams who advanced to the NCAA Tournament in Atlantic Sun Tournament Champion ETSU (three times) and Florida State. The Ospreys narrowly missed knocking off the Buccaneers in the A-Sun championship game, falling 63-62 on a last second shot. UNF also faced five teams who made the WNIT in Florida Gulf Coast (twice), South Florida, Wake Forest, Miami and Pittsburgh. North Florida defeated Gulf Coast 57-56 in one of their two meetings.
"We played great competition this past year," said women's head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "It prepared the team for his year and for the future to play at the level where we want to be, and that is competing for championships."
