Chris Kennedy nabs top-10 finish at ninth
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After a sub-par first round, the University of North Florida golf team regrouped and made a surge over the final two rounds to finish fifth at the Gary Koch Intercollegiate in Tampa, Fla.
UNF finished with a 3-round, 10-under 854 and ended just four strokes out of second place. The 15-team tournament, co-hosted by Auburn and Kentucky, was played at the par-72, 7,389 yard Old Memorial Golf Club.
The Ospreys sat tied for 12th after the first round on Saturday morning but the team shot the sixth-best second round on Saturday afternoon to move into a tie for 11th after two rounds and move within striking distance of the leaders heading into Sunday's final round.
On Sunday, only tournament champion Florida State (280) shot a better final round than the 283 the Ospreys shot that left them just two strokes behind Florida and Virginia and four behind second-place Texas Tech. Seventh-ranked FSU's 834 was a new 54-hole team tournament record.
Leading the way for UNF was junior Chris Kennedy who posted a top-10 finish at ninth with a 6-under 210 (70-69-71). Senior J.C. Horne followed closely behind and finished tied for 14 with a 4-under 212 (70-70-72). Sophomore Sean Dale, who entered the tournament as the No. 1-ranked golfer in the country by Golfweek/Sagarin, fired a 3-under 69 on Sunday to finish tied for 24 with a 215 (74-72-69). Freshman Kevin Phelan ended with a 217 (76-70-71) and sophomore Kevin Alywin at 228 (79-74-75).
“Today we played real solid,” said UNF golf coach Scott Schroeder. “It completed a good comeback after the poor first round. A fifth-place finish after the first round we had is a nice finish. This was a real good field so it showed we can compete against some very good schools.”
The teams competing included UNF, No. 7 Florida State, No. 8 Florida, No. 10 North Carolina, No. 21 Auburn, No. 27 Augusta State, No. 31 Virginia, No. 34 LSU, No. 35 Texas Tech, East Tennessee State, Georgia Southern, UAB, Kentucky, Ole Miss and USF.
Auburn's Kyle Kopsick (201) captured the individual title and recorded a new 54-hole individual tournament record. The previous record of 205 was set by Florida's Matt Every in 2003.
