Golfers tie for second, one stroke behind champion LSU; Phelan finishes tied for 8th
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The 28th-ranked University of North Florida golf team wrapped up its fall season with an impressive performance at the inaugural David Toms Intercollegiate in Baton Rouge, La., finishing tied for second in the 14-team field, just one stroke behind champion LSU.
After shooting an opening round 5-over, the Ospreys kicked it into high gear and shot 12-under over the final two rounds to finish at -7 (845) and tied with Kent State.
UNF jumped from a tie for ninth after the first round, to fourth after the second, to tied for second. The Ospreys shot 8-under in round two and 4-under in round three, the third and second best scores of the rounds, respectively.
Leading the way for UNF was freshman Kevin Phelan who finished tied for eighth at 3-under (70-70-70). Sophomore Sean Dale was right behind Phelan at -2 (74-67-70) and tied for 11th. Senior J.C. Horne and sophomore Kevin Alywin each finished tied for 24th at plus-2 (215), with Horne shooting 74-72-69 and Alywin 71-73-71. Junior Chris Kennedy ended tied for 38th at +5 (75-67-76=218)
The tournament was at the par-71, 6,849-yard Country Club of Louisiana. The teams played 36 holes on Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
“The guys played really well today,” said UNF golf coach Scott Schroeder. “Four rounds at par or better today. I'm real proud of the way we finished and played the last 30 holes or so better than anyone in the field. We are a little disappointed to finish second, especially by such a close margin. I felt it was our best team effort of the fall with different golfers stepping up in each round. It is a nice way to finish up the fall and head into the offseason. ”
The 14-team field included six teams ranked in the top 50 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, including UNF, No. 27 Northwestern, No. 35 Kent State, No. 37 LSU, No. 44 Auburn and No. 49 Southeastern Louisiana. The remaining teams were Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Pepperdine, Rice, South Alabama and UAB.
The Ospreys have finished second (out of 17), fifth (out of 15), tied for 10th (out of 15) and tied for second (out of 14) in their four fall tournaments.
Leading the way for North Florida is Dale who is currently ranked 23rd in the country. He captured the individual title at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate earlier this fall.
The David Toms Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Louisiana bears the name of a former LSU great and the most decorated golfer to ever play at the school.
Toms earned three All-America honors during a brilliant career at LSU from 1986-89, including a pair of first-team selections in 1988 and 1989. He was also a three-time First-Team All-SEC performer, and was honored as the program's only two-time SEC Player of the Year in 1988 and 1989. He guided LSU to two SEC championships during his career while winning the SEC individual title as a sophomore in 1987.
Toms has gone on to a successful professional career as a star on the PGA Tour. He has won a total of 12 PGA Tour events during a remarkable 18-year career, including his first career major championship at the 2001 PGA Championship, while earning more than $30 million in competition.
