
Golfers Rebound In Afternoon's Second Round, Sit In Fourth

Final round of tomorrow's David Toms Intercollegiate in jeopardy because of rain
The Ospreys shot a 5-over 289 in the morning, but rebounded with an 8-under 276 in the afternoon to move to 3-under (565) after two rounds and to within striking distance of leader and host LSU with one round remaining. The 276 was the third-best score of the second round. UNF is just four strokes out of second and seven behind LSU.
The tournament is at the par-71, 6,849-yard Country Club of Louisiana. After playing 36 holes today, the final 18 holes is slated to begin Tuesday at 10 a.m. ET, but inclement weather that is expected could wash out the final round.
Freshman Kevin Phelan sits tied for 12th after shooting a 2-under 140 (70-70) through two rounds. Sophomore Sean Dale is tied for 18th at -1 (74-67=141), junior Chris Kennedy is tied for 22nd at even par (75-67=142), sophomore Kevin Alywin is tied for 32nd at 2-over (71-73=144) and senior J.C. Horne is tied for 46th at +4 (74-72=146).
“We played poorly in the morning,” said UNF golf coach Scott Schroeder. “This afternoon was much better. Tomorrow might rain so it was real important to play well this afternoon.”
The 14-team field includes six teams ranked in the top 50 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, including UNF, No. 27 Northwestern, No. 35 Kent State, No. 37 LSU, No. 44 Auburn and No. 49 Southeastern Louisiana. The remaining teams are
The Ospreys have finished second (out of 17), fifth (out of 15) and tied for 10th (out of 15) in their three previous fall tournaments.
Leading the way for
The David Toms Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Louisiana bears the name of a former LSU great and the most decorated golfer to ever play at the school.
Toms earned three All-America honors during a brilliant career at LSU from 1986-89, including a pair of first-team selections in 1988 and 1989. He was also a three-time First-Team All-SEC performer, and was honored as the program's only two-time SEC Player of the Year in 1988 and 1989. He guided LSU to two SEC championships during his career while winning the SEC individual title as a sophomore in 1987.
Toms has gone on to a successful professional career as a star on the PGA Tour. He has won a total of 12 PGA Tour events during a remarkable 18-year career, including his first career major championship at the 2001 PGA Championship, while earning more than $30 million in competition.
