The current Ospreys beat the alumni 19-1 on Sunday afternoon.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team hosted its annual Alumni Game on Sunday afternoon at Harmon Stadium with the current Ospreys downing the alumni 19-1.
The game drew an impressive turnout of alumni, representing every team in program history. The alumni appeared to outnumber the current roster by a nearly 2-to-1 margin.
“It is good to see those guys come back and a couple of those guys can still play,” head coach Dusty Rhodes remarked after the game. “It is good to see those guys coming back and we had a really good time. That's what we have to do at this university. We have to depend on the people that played here and helped us before. We have always kept up with our guys and it makes a big difference, especially when they come back. We really had a good time and everyone enjoyed it.”
The alumni were the first to plate a runner as they scored a run in the first inning. The leadoff batter singled to start the game. A wild pitch and a passed ball moved the runner to third base and an RBI groundout gave the alumni a 1-0 advantage after one inning of play.
The one-run lead was short lived as the current Ospreys scored three runs in the top of the second inning to take the lead and did not look back. UNF's current players scored two or more runs in five innings, including a seven-run fifth inning to take command of the game.
The current Ospreys team collected 20 hits on the day, including four home runs. The pitching staff fanned 15 batters, allowing just one earned run on the day. UNF's defense was flawless, playing error-free baseball. The defense also turned two doubles plays on the afternoon.
The Alumni Game marked the end of fall practice for the Ospreys. The University of North Florida will start the 2010 season in February.
