Derek Marinatos was promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development in February 2026 after serving as Associate Athletic Director, where he played a pivotal role in delivering the most successful fundraising campaign in the history of North Florida Athletics.
During fiscal year 2025, North Florida Athletics generated more than $8 million in philanthropic support, including $8,071,921 from 2,893 donors, representing an 89 percent increase over the previous fundraising record. The total marked the third consecutive year with more than 2,800 donors, a first in department history. His leadership helped drive unprecedented donor engagement, major facility enhancements, and broad-based fundraising success across the department.
North Florida also delivered its most successful Giving Day ever in 2025, raising $856,276 from 1,810 donors. Athletics accounted for 40 percent of all donors and 36 percent of total dollars raised across the university, representing an increase of more than $250,000 from the previous year. The department also achieved 100 percent staff participation for the first time.
Marinatos joined the North Florida Athletics Development staff as Assistant Athletic Director in January 2023, transitioning from his role as North Florida Men's Soccer Head Coach, a position he held for 13 seasons. He was promoted to Associate Athletic Director in July 2025 before his elevation to Senior Associate Athetic Director in February.
Additional highlights during Marinatos’s tenure include the completion of a new Baseball Turf Facility, a turfed Family Fun Zone, and the creation of “The Pit,” a premium field-level seating experience at Harmon Stadium. He also helped lead seven-figure renovation of UNF Arena, the facility’s first comprehensive upgrade in more than 30 years, featuring redesigned locker rooms for North Florida Men's and Women's Basketball and North Florida Volleyball, an expanded athletic training room and a new video room.
Marinatos also supported a record-setting 2025 Blue & Gray Bash, which grossed $147,356, and a sold-out Fores Scholarship Golf Tournament.
Additionally, he helped launch North Florida Athletics Lifestyle Partners, creating new branding and engagement opportunities through collaborations with Sunrise Surf Shop, Angie’s Subs, INK Factory Brewing, Island Wing Company and St. Augustine Distillery.
A Jacksonville native and graduate of The Bolles School, Marinatos and his wife Brittany have three sons, Maxwell, Jaxon and Hudson.
